UNICEF Connect Case Study

About the project:

UNICEF Connect is the official blogging platform for UNICEF and its regional offices. I was part of a team that worked on this multi-site, multi-language blogging platform.

Work provided:

  • A intuitive user experience for corporate users of the platform: I streamlined their experience to make it as easy as possible to post stories.
  • This platform allows for very easy setup of a new blog along with a coherent URL structure.
  • Posts can be shared or “re-posted” easily amongst blogs

The Challenge

Prior to this platform, regional offices created their own blogs which led to a fractured user experience and diluted brand identity. URLs for these rogue blogs were haphazard and not standardized.

What I did:

I provided information architecture and visual design. I also served as project manager.

Insights

Create a superior user experience for the content creators
In most of my work, I have prioritized the end user experience. It’s the given. In this project, I had to also plan and design for the communication officers who would be populating the blogs with content. I wanted to present an intuitive user experience that would make their lives easier and not more complex. We heard that the simple “re-posting” of blog stories saved a lot of time for the content creators.

Design efficiency and restraint
Because many of the end users may be accessing the site in places of lower bandwidth, the design team intentionally designed simple and elegant themes for the blog sites. We practiced design restraint with this project, making sure that every element was absolutely necessary and not superfluous.

Language support in Arabic
Anything that shakes up existing norms like reading left to right is a challenge I’m up for!
